Current Behavior:

When upgrading a Power BI Template App (e.g. COVID-19 US Tracking Report, Premium Gen 2 Capacity Utilization Metrics, Power BI Premium Capacity Metrics, etc.)

  1. Template App renamed with current datetime

  2. Underlying Workspace renamed with current datetime

  3. Existing data wiped

  4. Data source connection severed - must be manually re-connected

This happens even when the user chooses to upgrade the existing Template App in-place. This behavior has been observed in third party Template Apps as well as Microsoft's own Template Apps.

Desired Behavior:

Upgrading a Template App should work just like publishing a new version of an existing report or dataset.

  1. Keep existing Template App name

  2. Keep existing Workspace name

  3. Create new dataset & report(s)

  4. Copy existing data source connection(s) and data from existing dataset to new dataset

  5. Refresh new dataset

  6. Hot-swap report connection(s) from old dataset to new dataset

  7. Delete existing dataset & report(s)
